Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about our services, how to get involved, and how Food & Care Coalition serves Utah County.

Getting Help

How do I get a meal at Food & Care Coalition?

Walk in during meal hours — no appointment, ID, or paperwork needed. Food & Care Coalition serves a hot meal every day of the year. We served over 109,000 meals last year alone. Our dining hall is open to anyone who is hungry.

Do I need an appointment for services?

For meals, no — just walk in. For case management, dental care, mental health services, and housing support, we recommend calling us at (801) 373-1825 or stopping by during regular business hours to connect with our team. We will work with you to get the support you need.

What services does the Coalition offer?

We provide daily meals, a community storehouse with clothing and household essentials, dental care, mental health counseling, individualized case management, and permanent supportive housing through Candlelight Villas. Every program is designed to meet people where they are and help them build stable, independent lives.

Is there emergency shelter in Utah County?

Utah County does not have a traditional congregate shelter. Food & Care Coalition provides emergency shelter nights through a voucher system in partnership with local motels. We also operate Candlelight Villas, our permanent supportive housing community with 110 units. If you or someone you know needs shelter, call us at (801) 373-1825 — we will help you find the best option available.

Donating & Supporting

How is Food & Care Coalition funded?

Over 90% of our funding comes from local community sources — private foundations, individual donors, businesses, and faith-based organizations. Less than 10% comes from government grants such as the Homeless Trust Fund and Community Development Block Grants. This community-driven model is what makes our work possible.

What are your administrative costs?

Food & Care Coalition consistently maintains one of the lowest administrative cost ratios among nonprofits in Utah. Our extensive volunteer network — over 15,000 volunteers each year — allows us to direct the vast majority of every dollar to programs and services that directly serve our patrons.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. Food & Care Coalition is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN: 87-0452977). All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You will receive a receipt for your records.

How can I donate food, clothing, or goods?

We gratefully accept donations of non-perishable food, gently used clothing, hygiene products, and household essentials at our facility at 299 E 900 S, Provo, UT 84606 during regular business hours. For large or specialized donations, please call us at (801) 373-1825 to coordinate.

Volunteering

How do I sign up to volunteer?

Visit our Get Involved page or email volunteer@foodandcare.org to learn about current opportunities and sign up. We welcome individuals, families, church groups, corporate teams, and student organizations.

What volunteer opportunities are available?

Volunteers serve in our kitchen, dining hall, community storehouse, dental clinic, and administrative offices. Opportunities range from one-time service projects to ongoing weekly commitments. We work with you to find the right fit for your skills and schedule.

Do you accept group or corporate volunteers?

Absolutely. Group volunteer events are one of the most popular ways organizations serve with us. Church groups, corporate teams, school clubs, and Scout troops regularly volunteer at Food & Care Coalition. Contact us at volunteer@foodandcare.org to schedule a group visit.

Are there age requirements for volunteers?

Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We welcome families and have age-appropriate tasks available. For school-age volunteers seeking community service hours, we are happy to sign verification forms.

About the Coalition

What does Food & Care Coalition do?

Food & Care Coalition is a Provo-based nonprofit serving Utah County since 1988. We provide daily meals, a community storehouse, dental care, mental health services, individualized case management, and permanent supportive housing. Our mission is to help our patrons build stable, independent lives — not just survive, but move forward.

How long has the Coalition been serving Utah County?

Since 1988 — that is 38 years of continuous service to our community. What began as a small effort to feed our neighbors has grown into a comprehensive service organization addressing meals, housing, healthcare, and case management.

What is Candlelight Villas?

Candlelight Villas is our permanent supportive housing community, providing 110 units of safe, stable housing for individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness. Residents receive on-site case management and support services to help them maintain housing and rebuild their lives.

Do most people experiencing homelessness choose to be?

No. The majority of people we serve are dealing with circumstances beyond their control — job loss, medical emergencies, domestic violence, mental illness, or physical disability. Even those who appear to have chosen this path often face a lack of realistic alternatives. After 38 years of serving Utah County, we can tell you: no one dreams of being homeless. People need support, opportunity, and a community that believes in their potential.
